Global interoperability for data protection and privacy laws: steps forward but still work to do

International data flows continue to grow in importance for the global digital economy, but frictions still exist in how global data protection and privacy laws interact and the requirements they place on organizations who want to transfer personal data.

The policy makers’ solutions to this challenge seek to promote better interoperability between data protection frameworks globally, while maintaining data protection standards to ensure trust from consumers and between different stakeholders. A number of initiatives are now progressing to translate the concepts into more practical benefits and outcomes. This includes work undertaken by the OECD and transformation of the Cross Border Privacy Rules system into a global system, beyond its foundation in APEC economies.   

This article explores the initiatives underway in 2024 and what steps are needed to bring them to fruition.
