Abhilasha Vij

Abhilasha primarily advises on international arbitration and cross-border disputes. She regularly acts as counsel to parties on a broad range of commercial disputes, including insurance, post-M&A, construction, and energy disputes. She also advises clients on investment treaty claims and investment restructuring.

Abhilasha has also worked extensively in connection with regulatory enforcement actions and internal investigations. In addition to her work as counsel, Abhilasha has also acted as tribunal secretary in several alternative dispute resolution proceedings.

Abhilasha holds an LL.M. from Stanford University (California, USA) in international economic law, business and policy. Prior to joining A&O Shearman, Abhilasha worked for several years for a major international law firm in Dubai (UAE) and an all-services law firm in Delhi (India), representing clients in large-scale domestic and international arbitrations and cross-border litigations. During her time in Dubai, Abhilasha was able to broaden her knowledge on sanctions through a secondment to the Compliance team of a major pharmaceutical corporation.

  •  A German energy corporation on a dispute arising out of a gas sales agreement with a Russian supplier.
  • An international automotive company on a USD25mn dispute with a major distributor in Oman. The LCIA arbitration was seated in London and the governing law of the contract was English law (previous firm experience).
  • A U.K-based investment company on a GBP40mn dispute with its co-investor in the DIFC, UAE. The dispute arose out of the exercise of ‘warrant’ subscription and culminated in a settlement subsequent to extensive negotiations (previous firm experience).
  • A leading energy company on a USD2bn dispute in relation to a project in Australia (previous firm experience).
  • A leading UAE telecommunication company on a dispute arising out of a Directors & Officers liability insurance. The matter also involved advising on proceedings before securities regulatory authority in Saudi Arabia and the Abu Dhabi courts in relation to potential liability arising out of misleading practices of the directors of the company (previous firm experience).
  • An American growth-equity investor firm on restructuring its investments in the Middle Eastern region (previous firm experience).
  • A leading UAE construction company on a potential investment treaty arbitration claim against an Asian state (previous firm experience).
  • A Gulf based investment fund on a potential dispute against the fund’s manager in the USA (previous firm experience).
  • A Chinese automotive company and its Indian subsidiary on a USD10mn dispute in Delhi, India. The matter involved representing the companies in an ICC arbitration seated in Delhi, India and related court proceedings before the Supreme Court of India and High court of Delhi (previous firm experience).
  • An Indian energy company on disputes arising out of the manufacturing and distribution contracts. The matter involved representing the company in four different arbitrations seated in Delhi, India (previous firm experience).
  • A Spanish turnkey service provider on a dispute in relation to an engineering, procurement and construction contract (previous firm experience).
  • A leading Indian stock brokerage company before the Supreme Court of India in an appeal from regulatory proceedings. The dispute involved complex securities law issues of manipulation of markets in relation to the purchase and sale of futures and options (previous firm experience).
  • Advising a European real estate investor regarding claims in connection with a share purchase agreement against its W&I insurers
  • Former subsidiaries of a large Asian automotive supplier in connection with the payment of a purchase price component in a post-M&A DIS arbitration. 
  • A telecommunications company in pursuing investment treaty claims against an Asian State in an UNCITRAL arbitration.
