Matthew has a broad range of disputes practice, with extensive experience in commercial and court litigation, international arbitration, restructuring, bankruptcy and insolvency proceedings, regulatory investigations and general advisory matters.

He has acted on behalf of clients in debt enforcement and asset recovery actions, contractual claims, shareholder disputes, directors’ liabilities, grant applications and secession rights, winding-up proceedings, interlocutory applications as well as information requests and interviews brought by the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong. He advises clients on a wide variety of legal matters under Hong Kong law, such as contract, tort, equity and trust (asset misappropriations, fiduciary duties), intellectual property, data privacy and employment.

Matthew works with major international clients across jurisdictions, including financial institutions, investment banks, listed corporations, senior management teams and high net-worth individuals, technology companies and many more.

Matthew is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong.

Representative matters

A Chinese bank in defending Hong Kong Court proceedings brought by an insolvent medical technology company and its liquidators.

A subsidiary of a Hong Kong listed company in a joint venture shareholder dispute against a director involving breach of fiduciary duties claims.

Independent administrators of a high value intestate estate on an application for the grant of letters of administration and related issues.

A global social media company in advisory and regulatory matters, data and content issues and compliance and enforcement risks under Hong Kong law in relation to online digital content.

The Ad Hoc Group of creditors on the Hong Kong Airlines restructuring in connection with the negotiation, structuring and implementation of restructuring and litigation strategies in Hong Kong and the U.K.

Pro bono

Advising a regional non-profit organization supporting migrant domestic workers on potential employment and overcharging claims in Hong Kong against employers, money lenders and employment agencies, including making complaints to the Hong Kong police and the Companies Registry and correspondence with money lenders to seek repayment. 
 
Advising a human rights charity in supporting refugees and ethnic minorities in their fresh applications (or renewal applications) to the Immigration Department for permission to work in Hong Kong. 
 
Partnering with a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization to represent refugees in applying for private sponsorship of refugees programme to Canada, including preparing narratives and application forms and liaising with clients and caseworkers on the applications.
