Allen & Overy has announced the appointment of leveraged and acquisition finance expert Marnie Fels. Marnie will be joining A&O in Sydney as a partner in the Asia Pacific Banking practice and Global Leveraged Finance practice.

Marnie specialises in leveraged and acquisition finance. Her practice focuses on global and domestic private equity sponsors and large corporates as well as banks and financial institutions, with a focus on M&A and leveraged finance.

Marnie also advises equity investors in relation to financing the acquisition of infrastructure assets and large corporations in respect of their general corporate financing arrangements. She is well versed in the full spectrum of credit products favoured by private equity sponsors, including stretch senior, unitranche, mezzanine and TLB financings.

Marnie joins Allen & Overy from Herbert Smith Freehills in Sydney. Her start date is not yet confirmed.

Commenting on the appointment, Denise Gibson and Nick Clark, co-heads of the firm’s Global Leveraged Finance practice, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Marnie to the team. Her appointment will create fantastic opportunities for the leveraged finance practice domestically and is another milestone in our continued investment in our global offering, which we are incredibly proud of.”

Robin Harvey, co-head of A&O’s Global Private Equity practice, added: “Marnie’s appointment means we now have a top-tier domestic and international offering for our private equity sponsor clients doing business in Australia.”

David Walter, Sydney Banking partner, said: “Marnie’s expertise strengthens our Banking and Corporate offering in Sydney. Her appointment enables us to offer sponsor-side leveraged finance services to our clients as a standalone practice in Australia. With the Australian leveraged finance market increasingly looking to the U.S. (and the UK) for techniques and capital, there are strong opportunities for collaboration between our Sydney, London and New York teams.”

This announcement follows on from a series of strategic hires for Allen & Overy’s Global Leveraged Finance practice in recent years
