A&O Shearman has appointed Scott Neilson as managing partner of the Tokyo office, effective February 17, 2025. Scott succeeds Matthias Voss, who has held the role since 2017 and is retiring from the firm after 30 years.

Masahisa Ikeda continues as head of our Tokyo office.

Scott is widely regarded as a leading energy partner with more than two decades of expertise in LNG, renewables, infrastructure and energy transition and climate change related initiatives for global clients.

Managing partner Hervé Ekué said: “As one of the world’s largest economies, Japan presents significant opportunities for our business. Under the leadership of Masahisa and Scott I am excited about the future for the Tokyo office, providing clients with one-stop access to Japanese and global legal services is key to our strategy. Our bengoshi and internationally qualified lawyers enable us to provide our clients with access to a unique combination of deep Japanese law expertise alongside world class international capability.

I want to thank Matthias for his leadership and contributions over many years, particularly in building our presence in key Asia markets, having practised in the region for over two decades.”

Scott Neilson added: “The A&O Shearman platform provides our clients with unrivaled access to global markets. We facilitate access for our Japanese clients to those global markets and our international clients with access to Japan. Japan is a hot market right now and our Japanese lawyers are assisting global clients in taking advantage of global shifts to invest in Japan. We remain committed to having the right mix of expertise to help our clients navigate an increasingly complex international market.”

Scott continues “Matthias has made a huge contribution to the development of our business, and I am eager to build on that success working with my fellow partners."
